Dear Eduardo. I am very interested in all of your work I have come across, especially your transgenic art projects. I am currently looking in detail at GFP bunny and was wondering if would be kind enough to take the time to answer a couple of questions for me. Firstly, I am not 100% certain of your aims. Was it simply to make the public more aware of genetic engineering? The discussions I have read all seem to stem around the ethics of actually planting the gene in the bunny, but I take it this is not what you really intended? You wanted it to go much deeper than this? I have read that you are trying to challenge peoples' preconceptions of "nature." How exactly does GFP bunny achieve this? One final debate I have been reading about is how is GFP bunny art? I am interested in the aesthetic values of the piece, but have read that this isn't really a concern for you...it is more about social value and acceptance. Is this correct? What is your definition of art and how does this project fit into that definition? Can you frame it in a historical context for me? Make any comparisons to other, perhaps older artists/theatre practitioners? I know there are quite a lot of questions, and I would be extremely grateful even if you only had time to answer one or two. I believe that producing transgenic animals for the advancement of biotechnology and genetic engineering should be supported, however, as I do have sentiment for Professor Kac to have Alba come home, it is important to remember the consequences of her release into the public. This field needs to be further studied, so there can be the opportunity to socially live with transgenic animals.

I had the misfortune to work with Eduardo a couple of years ago, whilst I was doing my Ph.D. I remember he regularly used to come into the lab, take one of our lab mice out of the cage, beat it to death and eat it raw. He was always going on about how the first thing he would do when he got Alba would be to kill her and have her stuffed. Eduardo Kac is a very, very evil man. I have proof that links him to the shooting of Dan Mcgrew and the Ode to the Haggis. He is cruel to children and it takes him two minutes to make one-minute muffins. He also votes Democraft, and smells. IT he got hold of Alba, he would turn her into weapons of mass destruction and sell her back to the French, who would in turn sell them to the shirt-head ay-rabs in the Middle East. Let that be a warning, fat Yankees.

I don't see what you have done as Art. It's entirely in the realm of the Freak sideshow. Everything you have said about your " art" could indeed be used to support such sideshows. Instead of poor Alba, why not your own child the next time round? And if you have objections to doing something like that to a child of yours, why do you think you had the right to do this to Alba?

well, THAT was certainly a good lecture at USF. why'd they take the punk-bunny away? poor little thing must be terribly confused and afraid. i am sorry to hear about it. last week i dreamed of pastel kittens. last night about glowing green angora sweaters harvested like wool from whole populations of bunny-rabbits. the marketting implications boggle the mind. as for the genesis gene, well, i'm sorry to say i could not swallow it no matter how hard i tried. that king james stuff is a translation of a translation of a translation, and very unreliable. now if you'd used the origional Hebraic phonemes and gone from there, maybe i could beleive in it, Mr. i remember the robots from when i was seven or eight in elementary school. this is in the mid-seventies. but i only saw them as glorified remote control cars. alas, by then i had become jaded from all that tv. my daughter's teachers do not believe that your bunny exists. that sums up american educational systems, yes? so many closed minds. so few intellectual pioneers. the vegans are up in arms, too. animal rights, messing with nature, as if as a species we've not been doing that all along. take a good look at cattle, that's what i say, selectively bred all the beneficial nutrients right out of them in favor of taste. messing with nature is in our nature. it's one of the defining charectoristics of homo-so-called-sapiens. please accept my condolences on the loss of your family member, Alba.

I just saw the Genesis exhibit. I am concerned about Alba's quality of life. Do the people at the lab love her? Do they take her outside to play in the grass, or she she sitting idly and alone in a cold, sterile cage? Does she get to meet other bunnies or other animals? Part of the artist's concept was to interact with her and provide her a loving home; she was not created to be a lonely freak in a cage. I fear the lab is treating her as a commodity and not a living creature who deserves a full life.

Alba should come home to Mr. Kac. Beyond the debate on whether a life in a domestic family setting is any 'better' than one spent in a laboratory, Alba should be at home because any artist should have the right to possess his/her art. Artists cannot have full ownership of the meaning of their work, but they do have a right to have the work in their possession if they so choose. I also think Alba’s presence within the setting of the family is a vital element of the project.
